Your roof is an important investment, and it only makes sense to ensure that you get the best performance out of it. The following are some things you can do to ensure that you get the most out of your roof, no matter what roofing system you have.

  1. Stick to a Scheduled Roofing Maintenance – Regular maintenance and timely repairs are some of the best things that you can do for your roof, but what’s more important is sticking to the schedule. Roofing maintenance conducted by a professional is done every two to three years, depending on the type of roof you have. Roofing problems, both hidden and apparent, can be addressed at this time.

  1. Regularly Inspect Your Roof – Regular roof inspections complement scheduled roofing maintenance by giving you the chance to spot potential roofing problems that may have occurred between the scheduled maintenance conducted by your roofing contractor. We recommend conducting a visual inspection of your roof every six months, keeping an eye on signs of damage inside and out.

  1. Trim the Trees Around Your Roof – If your home is surrounded by trees, extra care should be taken to ensure that the branches don’t touch your roof. Sharp branches can poke at the shingles and scrape the outer layer of shingles, which could lead to water intrusion. There should be about 10 feet of clearance between the outermost branches and your roof. In addition to keeping your roof scratch-free, it also helps reduce dead leaves that get into your gutters. It also prevents small animals from getting onto your roof.

  1. Ensure Your Attic Receives Sufficient Ventilation – The underlying roof structure, consisting of the trusses, rafters and roof deck, is vulnerable to heat and moisture. This is why your attic needs sufficient ventilation. Trapped heat and moisture can cause temperature differences between the roof’s interior and exterior surfaces, which can damage the roofing structure. Having ridge vents installed allows proper airflow through the attic. For bigger roof areas, consider solar-powered roof vents instead.
